At Pol Park, I decided to take a break and chill before heading home when I felt a cold, tender touch on my shoulder. I turned to see whom it was only to have my gaze fixed at an unparallel strange beauty with an unmatched majestic appearance.
"Good evening, I have no intentions of disturbing; I was told there is a path in the school that connects to the Teaching Hospital through a gate, Pls, can you tell me where to find it?" she said, softly.
" It's night already, that gate should be locked by now" I answered.
" Ahh! oooh!" she exclaimed sounding frustrated with thick furrows underlining her eyes
" You can just walk through second campus through the gate and you're in Teaching Hospital" I told her.
"The thing is that, I don't want to walk at the express alone. I should just head out through first gate and pick a bike"
"If you aren't in a hurry, we can go together in the next 30 minutes to 1 hour" I suggested
" That will mean a lot to me" she said sitting down beside me
After sitting for ten minutes, she excused herself only to come back with two Fearless energy drinks. handing over one to me and I shrugged in the negative while she insisted.
We plunged into conversation and I learned her name was Sheerah, a 300 level student of nursing who stays in the hostel and was going to see two of her friends that were involved in accident about three hours ago.
She also told me that she had been there but she needed to pick extra clothe from the hostel, hence, she would spend the night at the hospital with her friends as they sustained critical injuries from the accident. She said amidst sobs, placing her head on my shoulder.
I rubbed her shoulder gently telling her all will be well, reminding her of the necessity of faith, hope and prayers. she hugged me tight and I couldn't help but hold her. I wiped her tears with my handkerchief, carried her bag containing her clothes with my left hand while I held the drink she gave me with my right.
She rose up gently, standing shoulder to shoulder with me in height. Beyond her cloud of pain, I saw a beautiful lady with a pure heart. We walked solemnly at first until I sprouted conversations engendered at lightening her mood.
I opened the drink and told her she would have to drink it first so I would know if I am being poisoned or not, "make I no go die because fine girl give me Fearless" She laughed and asked what on earth would make me think such.
She sipped from mine and insisted I sip from hers cos "I fit don put witch for her own, she no sabi." I laughed and sipped from hers.
We tried to maintain that atmosphere until we got to the Accident and Emergency unit where her friends were admitted. She hugged me and bid me goodnight telling me to stay safe and avoid late nights as Villa Suite isn't safe at the moment. before going inside the ward.
Turning to go, I discovered Sheerah has forgotten to take her bag. I decided to go into the ward and give her the bag. In the ward, I saw two ladies encircled on the bed around someone lying while some persons were sitting or standing. Those sitting and standing were either crying or lamenting with others hanging their heads in despair.
I moved towards them and immediately one of the ladies wailed loudly, asking me how I got the bag. Though confused, I later discovered that they had gone out that evening with some guys and Sheerah forgot her bag in the hotel room containing her phone and other valuables. It was while she was going to retrieve it that a car had knocked her down from the bike and she had died instantly about three hours ago and they were waiting for the family members to deposit the corpse in the mortuary.
As she kept narrating the story to the people, I was completely lost in thought, dumfounded, confounded and paralyzed and all of it revolves around the drink I had with Sheerah, the ghost.
